An Assessment of Phase Space Engineering
Discussion Leader: Herb Berk
Issues in phase space engineering:
A. Knowing where the alpha particle are, to determine heating properties and ignition scenarios
- Accounting for classical confinement with field errors
- Measuring their population under classical and fluctuating conditions
- Comparing with calculations for ignition scenarios
B. Using alpha particle properties for diagnostic purposes
(e.g., knock-on effect, double charge exchange, escape spectra, etc.)
C. Self-consistent plasma effects as a diagnostic
- Ion cyclotron emission
- TAE and other Alfven signatures
- Fishbone signatures
D. Active intervention using alpha particle effects
- Suppression of saw-teeth
- Mechanisms to implement energy channelling
- Waves and "buckets" to control He build-up
- Using instabilities to control burn characteristics
E. Additional suggestions appreciated
